The Assignment
When learning about the American War of Independence, most of the textbooks we read in school are from the point of view of Patriot supporters. What about the Loyalists? How did they view the events of the War of Independence? In order to be good historians, we need to be able to empathize with other people's perspectives, show integrity when telling history, and work together in order to better understand the events of our past.
Step One
1.Click on the Lessons tab at the top of the page.
2.Follow the directions listed on the page. We will be doing these activities as a class.
3. You will talk with your learning partner the following day about what was learned in the previous lesson before sharing your research with the rest of the class. You will do this for each of the lessons listed under the Lessons tab.
Step Two
Now that you have finished the lessons, you need to think about the virtues each of these groups showed during the war. Remember the virtues we talked about in class: Integrity, Loyalty, Honesty, Fortitude, Justice, Empathy, and Hard-Work. In your history journal, write 3 virtues the Loyalists had and 3 virtues the Patriots had.
Next, write one paragraph comparing your virtues with the virtues of either the Loyalists or the Patriots. Answer these questions:
We will share your answers with your learning partners and the class the following day.
Step Three
Now that you are an expert on the Loyalists and Patriots, it's time to share that knowledge with others. I will place you into groups of five, and you will work together to create a poster that shows the Patriot perspective and the Loyalist perspective for the historical event you choose (these are the same events you have been investigating in Step One). Each person in the group will have a job. You will need to talk with your group and decide who would be the best at each job. These jobs are:
Be Respectful
Be Responsible
Be a great teammate
Don't worry! I know it's a lot of work. I will guide you through every step of this assignment. We will be doing this work in class.

- What virtues do you value? Why?
- Are your virtues similar to the Loyalists or the Patriots? Why?
- If you were a person living in 1776 America, which side would you choose and why?
- After reading real documents written by people on both sides of the war, do you think that these documents represent everyone's opinion on the War? If yes, then why? If not, whose opinions are missing and why?
We will share your answers with your learning partners and the class the following day.
